The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously flexible, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
